      FASHION TRIVIA

      QUESTION: When were zippers invented?

ANSWER: With origins dating as early as 1850,
the "clasp-locker" made its official appearance
at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. Patented by
an engineer named Whitcomb Judson, the design was
intended to replace the hook-and-eye shoelaces so
popular in the 1800's. Later modifications
allowed the device to be attached to clothing as
well as shoes. In imitation of the sound it
made, the term "zipper" was coined in 1923 by B.
      F. Goodrich, who put the apparatus on a new
product his company developed: the rubber
      overboot.

      YVES SAINT LAURENT

"I have today decided to bid farewell to the
world of fashion I have so loved," an emotional
Yves Saint Laurent said at a press conference in
Paris January 6th, confirming speculation of an
upcoming retirement. After four decades as a
pioneer in the industry, he'd come full circle:
the first YSL collection was shown in January,
      1962.

Born in the Algerian port of Oran in 1936, Saint
Laurent came from a wealthy French colonial
family. In fact, his great-great-grandfather was
the lawyer who drew up Napoleon Bonaparte and
      Josephine's wedding contract.

In 1955, after sharing first prize in the
      prestigious International Wool Secretariat
competition with Karl Lagerfeld, Saint Laurent
was hired as a design assistant by Christian
Dior. Following Dior's sudden death in 1957,
Saint was appointed as head designer of the House
      of Dior.

His first collection, which included the
now-famous "trapeze" dress, was greeted with wild
enthusiasm. Two years later, however, his "Beat"
collection, inspired by Paris street style, was
widely panned by the critics. Conscripted into
the French army in September of that year, Saint
      Laurent suffered a nervous breakdown.

By 1961, Saint Laurent was ready to return to
fashion. He established Yves Saint Laurent
Couture with his longtime partner, Pierre Berge,
and with financing from American millionaire Mack
      Robinson.

The Rive Gauche boutiques for women were
established in 1966, and men's wear was added in
1974. Notable contributions include the trouser
suit, the safari look, "Le Smoking" tuxedo
      jacket, see-through blouses (1968), peasant
blouses, bolero jackets, and smocks. He made the
tuxedo popular again, and brought transparent
      clothes to the runway.

The Yves Saint Laurent Groupe has been on the
Paris Stock Exchange since 1989. Saint Laurent
sold his couture house to Sanofi in 1993 for $650
million. Sanofi was then purchased by luxury
goods company LVMH in 1999 for a reported $900
      million.

Tom Ford has been the head designer of the YSL
Ready-To-Wear lines ever since, while Saint
Laurent has maintained control of the couture
collections. When Saint Laurent retires later
this year, YSL Haute Couture will cease
      operations; the Ready-To-Wear, accessories, and
      perfume lines will remain intact.
