      FASHION TRIVIA

QUESTION: What was the first design item Coco Chanel
      became known for?

ANSWER: Hats. She opened her first millenary shop in
Paris in 1913. Sweaters soon followed, and the House of
Chanel was officially born in 1914.

      HUBERT DE GIVENCHY

Hubert de Givenchy was born in Beauvais, France, in 1927.
He attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Faculté de
Droit in Paris before going to work with Jacques Fath at the
age of 17. He also designed for Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong
before joining Elsa Shiaparelli in 1947, where he assisted in
designing separates for the next four years.

By 1951, at age 24, he felt he was ready to strike out on his
own. With little money for an expensive salon or to purchase
fine fabrics, he nonetheless showed his first haute couture
collection, a range of separates made from inexpensive cottons,
in the winter of 1952. The establishment was shocked. No one
showed separates for couture, and certainly not in cotton. But
skepticism quickly turned to excitement as his clothes became
      instant bestsellers.

For Givenchy focused on a clean, classic silhouette instead of
embellishments on his designs. The clothes appeared simple and
easy to adapt, and flattered many different body types. Like
Balenciaga, Givenchy knew a secret: make a woman look fabulous
no matter how she's shaped, and she'll become a lifelong
      customer.

Such was the case for Givenchy. By the late 1950's, he was popular
throughout the world, in part because of his Hollywood clientele.
Audrey Hepburn wore his clothes in many of her movies, including
"Sabrina", "Funny Face", and "Breakfast at Tiffany's". Her rise in
Hollywood coincided with Givenchy's rise in the fashion world.

After celebrating 40 years in fashion in 1992, Givenchy retired.
The House of Givenchy is currently part of the LVMH stable of
fashion houses, and has had several popular design talents pass
through its doors in the last decade, including John Galliano,
      Alexander McQueen, and Julien McDonald.
